Heritage
The Century-Old Legacy
The story of the Tezpur Litchi began exactly a century ago in 1923, transforming the horticultural landscape of Assam. While litchi cultivation was present elsewhere in India, Tezpur owes its unique, juicy, and flavorful varieties to the vision of one man: Padmanath Gohain Baruah.
As the first Assamese Chairman of the Tezpur Municipality, he imported hybrid saplings from Kolkata (then Calcutta) and planted them along the banks of local ponds, particularly the historic Paltan Pukhuri (now known as Lichu Pukhuri).
Over the decades, these trees flourished, giving rise to famous local varieties like Shahi, Bombaiya, Bilati, and Ilachi, which are now celebrated for their high pulp content and small seeds.
